For instance, you cure Bloaty Head with an Inflation Clinic, in which the doctor literally pops the patient's head with a giant needle. See, one of the challenges in the game is that each level introduces new diseases which require different steps to cure. In the first couple of levels, you get people coming in with made up diseases like Bloaty Head, Slack Tongue, and Invisibility. Oh, and did I mention the level progress screen is in the format of a board game, with each level being a picture of a different macabre scenario where someone would end up in the hospital? Or the other distinct sound of someone literally falling to Hell through a hole made by the Grim Reaper. After this it doesn't tell you anymore when a person dies you simply have to go by the distinct sound of a person turning into an angel and ascending into the sky. At least you would, if the game didn't make it very clear that it happened. You might miss it happening the first time. That, or they'll keel over and die where they stand because you couldn't treat them in time, or your attempt to cure them ends up killing them instead. You'll also at some point receive one that essentially says "we have no idea what's wrong with this person and no way to cure them, what do you want us to do?"Īt this point, you can just send people home or tell them to keep waiting, but eventually they'll just get fed up and leave. For instance, here is one of the songs that cycles throughout the game. The biggest thing in my mind is how huge of a contrast there is between the atmosphere and the content of the game. There are 10 levels to complete, each with their own goals. You hire your staff, build specialized rooms for different purposes, set policies, etc.

The very concept - a hospital business simulation game - is about as morbid as it comes.īut as I began to sink more hours into it, I began to realize just how dark it was ( especially for an E-rated game), and the realization was so gradual and compelling to me that I felt I needed to write out something to explain it. It doesn't take you long to figure that out, either - the game has a blatantly dark sense of humor. It's original, it's challenging, it (as well as its soundtrack) has aged pretty damn well for a 1997 PC game, it's funny and, last but not least, it's pretty fucking dark. I picked up Theme Hospital for the first time the other day and it's almost hard to describe how much fun I've been having with it.
